American Kaitlyn Farrington won gold in women’s Olympic snowboarding, taking the women’s halfpipe with a score of 91.75.
Farrington edged defending champion Torah Bright of Australia and American teammate Kelly Clark to win gold.
Clark recovered to earn bronze and win her third Olympic medal.
Farrington spent most of the competition playing second-fiddle to Clark, the 2002 Olympic champion. She had to navigate the semifinals to earn the victory before advancing to the finals.
‘‘I fought to get in finals,’’ Farrington said in a statement. ‘‘I did all three rounds. To come out on top, I couldn’t believe it.’’
When Farrington finished the race, the crowd was cheering and there were hugs all around.
All eyes locked on the electronic scoreboard, and finally the numbers flashed.
When Farrington saw Clark’s score of 90.75, she lifted her arms into the air in celebration.
The victory gave the United States just its third gold medal of the Olympics.
